Q. Evaluate the contribution of Vijayanagara to the development of fine arts.

  • Introduction:  Great patrons of fine arts and great builders
  • Body: Fine arts in capital
  • Conclusion: Sculpture, painting and music

The emperors of Vijayanagara were great patrons of fine arts. They were great builders who felt great delight and interest in spending money more liberally on constructing works of public beauty such as long roads, large tanks, reservoirs, lakes and other useful works of irrigation and water supply as well as on building gorgeous palaces and temples decorated with all resources of art, both sculpture and painting.

The ruins of Vijayanagara, the old capital of the empire, proclaim that there evolved under the patronage of its emperor a distinct style of architecture, sculpture and painting by native artists. The religious zeal of the emperors found expression in splendid temples that have been described by western experts as perfect specimens of Hindu architecture. The famous Hazara temple built during the reign of Krishnadevaraya is one of the most perfect specimens

The art of sculpture and painting also attained a high degree of excellence and they were wonderfully improved. The art of music swiftly developed. Some new works on music were also produced.
