Introduction
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial medicines. As a result of drug resistance, antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines become ineffective and infections become difficult or impossible to treat, increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, disability and death.
AR has the potential to affect people at any stage of life, as well as the healthcare, veterinary and agriculture industries. This makes it one of the world’s most urgent public health problems.
Body
The Government of India has taken many initiatives to combat Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). The initiatives include
National surveillance networks including laboratories from across the country have been established and are generating National AMR Surveillance reports annually and also submitting data to the Global AMR Surveillance System (GLASS).
Awareness material on judicious use of antimicrobials and hand hygiene and infection prevention has been developed and shared with various stakeholders.
National Guideline on Infection prevention has been launched
To promote judicious use of Antimicrobials, surveillance of Antimicrobial use has been initiated at tertiary care hospitals.
Ministry of Health & Family Welfare launched the National Action Plan on AMR (NAP-AMR) in 2017 which was developed in alignment with the Global Action Plan on AMR.
Conclusion
Draft NAP-AMR 2.0 has been prepared covering the period 2024-2028 to manage the huge burden of Antimicrobial Resistance in India. NAP 2.0 is expected to include specific action plans and roadmaps for individual ministries / departments / organisations that were not a part of the first national action plan.
